Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (chemical formula: MgSO4·7H2O)
Is a colorless or white crystalline powder. It is highly soluble in water and hygroscopic. It is rich in magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) elements and is an important raw material for industry, agriculture, and medicine.
Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (molecular formula MgSO4 · 7H2O)
Also known as sulfurous salt, bitter salt, purgative salt and purgative salt, is a white or colorless needle like or inclined column like crystal, odorless, cool and slightly bitter, molecular weight: 246.47, specific gravity: 1.68, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerin, and soluble in its own crystal water at 67.5 ºC. When heated to decompose, the crystal water with four molecules lost at 70 and 80 ºC. At about 200 ºC, all crystal water is lost and becomes anhydrous. It is easy to be weathered into powder in the air (dry). When heated, the crystallized water is gradually removed and becomes anhydrous magnesium sulfate. This product does not contain any toxic impurities. Because magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is not easy to dissolve, it is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, so it is convenient for quantitative control in industry. It is mainly used in the manufacture of fertilizer, leather, printing and dyeing, catalyst, paper, plastic, porcelain, pigment, match, explosive and fireproof materials. It can be used for printing and dyeing thin cotton cloth and silk, as weighting agent of cotton silk and filler of kapok products; it is used as cathartic in medicine.
