What is styrene acrylic sizing agent?

Styrene acrylic sizing agent is a key papermaking chemical that forms a film on the surface of paper to achieve water resistance and improve printability. It is an efficient solution for improving surface properties of modern papermaking (especially packaging paper and high-grade printing paper). It needs to be used in combination with starch to balance cost and performance.

Materials used for styrene acrylic sizing agents

Styrene acrylic sizing agent is a synthetic polymer surface sizing agent used in the papermaking industry. Its core component is styrene-acrylate copolymer emulsion (styrene acrylic emulsion for short).

Application of styrene acrylic sizing agent in the papermaking industry

Styrene acrylic sizing agent (styrene acrylic surface sizing agent) is mainly used in packaging printing, paper processing, and other fields, including corrugated paper, boxboard, white paper, kraft paper, and other paper types, to improve the water resistance, ring crush strength, and printability of paper. In addition, this sizing agent is also used in the textile and construction industries, among which the packaging and printing industry is its main application field. With the promotion of environmental protection policies and the growth of industry demand, the application demand of styrene acrylic sizing agents in packaging, printing, building materials, als and other fields continues to grow.

The core function of styrene acrylic emulsion

1. Improve water resistance

● Prevent water and water vapor from penetrating (reduce the Cobb water absorption value of paper).

● Suitable for packaging paper, food paper, etc.

2. Enhance surface strength

●  Bonding surface fibers/fillers to reduce the "hair loss and powder loss" phenomenon during printing.

3. Improve printability

● Provide a smooth surface to make the ink adhere evenly, improving printing clarity and color saturation.

Advantages and disadvantages of styrene acrylic surface sizing agent

Category

Advantages

Disadvantages

Water resistance

The water resistance is several times higher than that of starch alone, close to the effect of internal sizing agents (such as AKD).

The film will reduce the air permeability of the paper (not suitable for filter paper, medical paper and other paper types that require air permeability).

Surface strength

Reduce paper fiber shedding, suitable for high-speed printing.

Excessive use may cause the paper surface to become more brittle (the addition ratio needs to be controlled).

Printing Effect

Provide smooth surface, improve ink adhesion and color reproduction, and increase printing gloss.

Sensitive to drying temperature, insufficient drying will lead to incomplete film formation (100-120℃ full drying is required).

Applicability

Covering high-end paper types: packaging paperboard (milk cartons, corrugated paper), label paper, coated paper, etc.

Not suitable for paper types that require breathability and softness (such as toilet paper and cigarette paper).

Applicable paper types

1. Packaging paperboard: corrugated paper, white cardboard, liquid packaging paper (such as milk cartons).

2. High-end cultural paper: coated paper, offset printing paper, illustrated paper.

3. Special paper: label paper, food packaging paper, moisture-proof paper.

Conclusion

Styrene acrylic sizing agent has become the cornerstone of neutral/alkaline sizing in modern medium- and high-speed paper production lines due to its excellent sizing efficiency, rapid maturation, excellent operating stability, good paper machine running performance, and wide adaptability to paper grades. It has successfully overcome the acidity limitation of traditional rosin sizing and the main operating difficulties of AKD/ASA, providing papermaking enterprises with efficient, stable, and economical sizing solutions.

As the paper industry continues to increase its requirements for cost-effectiveness, production efficiency, product quality, ty and environmental sustainability, styrene acrylic sizing agent technology is also continuing to innovate and develop. By optimizing monomer combinations, strengthening cross-linking technology, developing bio-based raw materials, adopting environmentally friendly emulsification systems, exploring multifunctionality, and embracing intelligent control, styrene acrylic sizing agents will continue to consolidate their core position in the field of paper chemicals and better serve the green, intelligent, and efficient future paper industry.
