High charge density: The small ionic radius (approximately 74 pm) results in a high charge density (large charge/radius ratio).
Polarization: The high charge density makes Zn²⁺ readily coordinate with lone pairs of electrons in odor molecules, forming stable complexes and eliminating odors.
High coordination number adaptability: Zn²⁺ can typically bind to multiple odor molecules, forming tetra-, hexa-, and octa-coordinate (polyhedral) geometric structures.
